To all our esteemed Partners and stakeholders, After five marathon years hosting various editions of the Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice (NSSCJ), we felt that it was time to pause a little, review, reflect and recalibrate. This will enable us to celebrate the achievements, look at the challenges and pick the lessons to build a more agile program that resonates with our alignment with the shifting geopolitical landscape, as it is espoused in our 2026 – 2030 Strategic Plan. About
Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice
The Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice (NSSCJ) is an intergenerational initiative conceptualized to share, learn, and network on disruptive ideas needed to catalyze economy-wide transformation in a climate-catastrophic world.
The School offers tailor-made course modules developed and delivered by outstanding eminent scholars, experts, researchers, and community-based scholars and activists from both the Global South and North, as well as Africa’s leading climate justice strategists and practitioners.
It provides a timely platform for long-standing scholar-activists, community-based organizers, and the younger generation of climate justice advocates and practitioners to exchange knowledge, deepen collaboration, and co-create solutions. The School adopts a society-wide approach, targeting sectoral and thematic experts and frontline activists irrespective of formal education or cultural background.
NSSCJ has cemented its leading role in shaping Africa’s climate policy discourse and intervention strategy, powered by a vibrant and growing alumni network of climate justice advocates across the continent and beyond.
Since its inception, the Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice has successfully delivered five cohorts:
- Cohort I (2021) – held from 30th August to 11th September 2021;
- Cohort II (2022) – held from June 26 to July 10, 2022;
- Cohort III (2023) – held from July 3 to July 14, 2023 at Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya;
- Cohort IV (2024) – held at Chuka University, Kenya; and
- Cohort V (2025) – hosted at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, from August 25 to September 6, 2025, serving as a precursor event to the Africa Climate Summit (ACS-2).
To date, NSSCJ has trained over 2,000 participants—including policymakers, researchers, youth leaders, civil society actors, and community champions—from across Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Caribbean.
Each cohort builds on the vision of fostering a generation of climate-literate, justice-oriented leaders capable of driving transformative, inclusive, and sustainable change across societies.
